No-sew lavender dream pillows

Contributed by Julia Koberlein

I was trying to think of something for my son's teacher that he could help with and that I hadn't seen anywhere else before. So I put together the idea of the new no-sew fleece pillows and throws with the popularity of herbal microwavable pillows, eye covers, etc.

Materials:

  • 1 large-sized bath tea bag (we used the paper kind that you fill and then seal with an iron to close off the last side, but you can use a cloth one that you can get at a natural food store like Lori's), maybe 5" x 3-1/2"

  • Mixture of flax seeds and dried lavender flowers (or other herbs of choice...again, you can usually get the quantities you want at a natural food store) to mostly fill the bag

  • 2 rectangles of fleece material approx. 11" x 9" (or about 3 inches additional on each side of the bath tea bag's dimensions)

  • Sharp scissors

Directions:

    1. Fill the bath tea bag with the flax & lavender mixture and seal bag.

    2. Center bath tea bag over fleece rectangles (one of top of the other).

    3. Cut strips about 3/4" apart from each side up to the edge of the bath tea bag.

    4. Cut out the corner areas and remove bath tea bag from top.

    5. Tie a double knot (or square knot) using a strip from top and bottom layers.

    6. Continue around three sides, and then put bath tea bag with herbs inside layers.

    7. Tie strips together on final side. Voilà! This can be microwaved for a more intense herbal scent. Or put it with your pillow at night for sweet dreams.

My son helped by picking out the fleece material, choosing the herbs, and tying the strips together, and stuffing the inside. It worked out nicely, I think, and didn't require a sewing machine.
