Ideas for a wet London weekendWhen the days are still short and everywhere very soggy, summer can seem a long way off. Keeping the family happy and busy at the weekend without spending a fortune can feel like a challenge. Here are a few ideas for having fun together and making the most of a great city like London. How about a family swim at your local pool or leisure centre: we can’t find a comprehensive web site for a complete listing of London pools so look in your local phone book or yellow pages or do a local area internet search. Find out about fun sessions where there may be floats and toys in the pool.
Visit a museum or gallery; London has an incredible choice and many are free with hands on activities for children or "find the answer" trails to keep up the enthusiasm. Have a look in our Places to Go section for inspiration. A visit to your local library can be a weekly event and again, many libraries organise children's activities; often for free.
It's unlikely to rain all weekend but even if it does why not wrap up, pull on the waterproofs and head to your local park for a run around. Meet up with another family for a game of stuck in the mud (its pretty hilarious watching dad trying to get through the legs of a 3 year old). Rather than inviting friends for lunch why not do tea instead? Boiling the kettle and chucking some biscuits and cakes on a plate isn't nearly as much hassle but does give you the opportunity for a chat and for the kids to play. How about rediscovering your inner Blue Peter? A dreary Sunday can be happily filled by constructing a doll's house or farmhouse out of shoe boxes stuck together or a farmyard for all those animals – tinfoil for a pond, twigs stuck into plasticine for a fence and so on!
